Blood Pressure Testing at Towngate Pharmacy

What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure changes throughout the day due to factors like your circadian rhythm (the body’s daily hormonal cycle), activity levels, meals, stress, fatigue, and hydration. It reflects the pressure your blood exerts on artery walls as your body adjusts it based on its needs. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and is an essential part of routine health checks. Adults over 40 should have their blood pressure tested at least every 5 years to detect potential issues early.

What Are the Types of Blood Pressure?

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): A reading of 140/90mm Hg or higher indicates high blood pressure. This condition puts extra strain on arteries, causing them to harden and narrow, which can lead to cholesterol build-up (atheroma), increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. It can also damage small blood vessels and vital organs due to sustained pressure.
  • Hypotension (Low Blood Pressure): A reading of 90/60mm Hg or lower is considered low blood pressure. Although less severe, it can cause symptoms like dizziness, nausea, weakness, and fainting.

What Can I Do to Lower My Blood Pressure?

If your blood pressure falls between 120/80mm Hg and 140/90mm Hg, you might be at risk of developing hypertension. Regular monitoring and tests for kidney or liver damage may be recommended. Steps to lower blood pressure include:

  • Reduce salt intake: Increase your consumption of fruits, vegetables, fish, and white meat.
  • Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking narrows arteries and restricts blood flow, so cutting down or stopping is crucial.
  • Limit alcohol consumption: Reducing or eliminating alcohol can significantly improve blood flow.
